Users review: I just saw it at LFF. It is a brilliant piece of cinema. Its central theme is clearly slavery, and people can easily reach natural evil, but it has many other little moments that inspire reflections on broader issues - the role of religion being one example. He is violent and, in some ways, terrible to watch, but it is the story of Solomon Northup said sincerely. Nothing saccharine about the way Steve McQueen presents and this is what makes it great. You are crying because you witness is really awful, not because the violins are out and the director of pulling on your heart strings. All of the performances are first rate, as is the score by Hans Zimmer. It really should be essential viewing for everyone with enough to understand this age group. |
